Surah Al-Baqarah Verses 45–48: Arabic, English and urdu Translation
Detailed Explanation of Surah Al-Baqarah 45–48
- Verse 45 — Seek Help Through Patience and Prayer
“Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is difficult except for those who are humbly devoted.”
English explanation
Allah teaches two essential ways of facing hardship and fulfilling religious duties:
Sabr—patience and steadfastness: This includes remaining obedient to Allah, avoiding sinful actions, controlling oneself during hardship, and continuing to do what is right even when it is difficult. Some early commentators also understood patience here to include fasting, since fasting trains a person to control desires.
Salah—prayer: Prayer connects a believer directly with Allah. It gives spiritual strength, restores perspective, and reminds the believer that no difficulty is greater than Allah’s power.
The verse says prayer is “difficult” or “burdensome” except for the khashi‘in. Khushu‘ means genuine humility, attentiveness and submission arising from awareness of Allah’s greatness. It is not merely lowering the head or appearing outwardly religious; it is primarily a condition of the heart. Ma‘arif al-Qur’an commentary
Prayer feels heavy when it is regarded only as an obligation interrupting daily life. It becomes easier and spiritually comforting when a person understands before whom they are standing and why they are praying.
Practical lesson
When facing anxiety, temptation, grief or an important decision, a believer should not depend only on personal ability. They should remain patient, perform prayer sincerely and ask Allah for guidance.
- Verse 46 — Certainty of Meeting Allah
“They are those who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.”
English explanation
This verse explains why prayer becomes easier for humble believers: they know that worldly life is temporary and that they will eventually stand before Allah.
The Arabic word yazunnun can sometimes mean “to suppose,” but in this context it conveys firm expectation or certainty. These believers are convinced that:
They will meet their Lord.
They will be held accountable for their actions.
They will return entirely to Allah.
Their patience and worship will not be wasted.
Awareness of the Hereafter changes a person’s priorities. Someone who remembers accountability is more likely to pray sincerely, resist wrongdoing, fulfil other people’s rights and remain patient when immediate results are not visible. This connection between humility and certainty of returning to Allah is also highlighted in traditional commentary. Ma‘arif al-Qur’an on verses 45–46
Practical lesson
Remembering death and accountability is not intended to produce hopelessness. It is meant to create responsibility, sincerity and preparation for the Hereafter.
- Verse 47 — Allah’s Blessings upon the Children of Israel
“O Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I bestowed upon you and how I favoured you over the peoples of your time.”
English explanation
Allah again calls the Children of Israel to remember the special blessings He granted them. These included:
Deliverance from Pharaoh’s oppression
The sending of numerous prophets among them
Divine scriptures and religious guidance
Miraculous protection and provision
Opportunities to live according to Allah’s commands
The command to “remember” does not mean merely recalling these events. True remembrance requires gratitude, obedience and responsible use of Allah’s blessings.
The expression “favoured you over the worlds” should not be interpreted as unconditional racial superiority for all time. Classical explanations generally connect this distinction to the blessings granted to their community in its historical period. Privilege in the Qur’anic worldview brings responsibility; it does not excuse disbelief, injustice or disobedience.
Therefore, ancestry alone cannot guarantee salvation. A community honoured by Allah must respond with faith, gratitude and obedience. If it rejects guidance, its historical status will not protect it from accountability.
Practical lesson
Every blessing—knowledge, wealth, family, health or religious guidance—is also a responsibility. Gratitude requires using that blessing correctly.
- Verse 48 — Personal Accountability on Judgement Day
“Fear a Day when no soul will benefit another in any way, no intercession will be accepted from it, no compensation will be taken from it, and no one will be helped.”
English explanation
This verse destroys the false belief that ancestry, status, wealth or influential connections can independently save someone before Allah.
It describes four realities of Judgement Day:
No soul can carry another soul’s responsibility. Each person will answer for their own faith and actions.
No intercession will be accepted independently of Allah. Other Qur’anic verses clarify that intercession can occur only when Allah permits it, such as in verse 2:255.
No ransom or compensation will be accepted. Worldly wealth cannot purchase freedom from divine judgement.
Wrongdoers will not be rescued by force. No group or authority can overpower Allah’s decision.
The verse is especially relevant after the reminder of historical blessings. It teaches that past honour does not cancel present responsibility. A person should therefore rely on Allah’s mercy while sincerely believing, repenting and doing righteous deeds—not on family background or empty claims.
Practical lesson
A believer should hope for Allah’s mercy but must not become careless. Genuine hope is accompanied by faith, repentance, prayer and righteous conduct.
Central Message
These four verses present a connected spiritual path:
Difficulty → patience and prayer → humility → awareness of the Hereafter → gratitude for Allah’s blessings → personal accountability.
The main lesson is that believers should seek Allah’s help through patience and prayer, remain conscious of their return to Him, use His blessings responsibly and prepare personally for the Day of Judgement.
